Ok... First Dyna so I'm riding it like a mad man, just got off of a street glide and I'm loving the agile nature of this thing but I'm stumped... When I'm on the freeway and pull hard from 3rd through 5th it just sputters and cuts out like I have vapor lock or I'm out of gas. Seems like opening the gas cap does help, but I'm also not on the throttle while twisting the cap off either, it stumbles for about 15 seconds at a time then returns to normal. On or reserve, it doesn't make a difference, new fuel lines, new gas cap and fuel gauge, all the vents are free and clear, and I even tried running it without a vent hose at all, so that's not the issue. If I'm cruising around 80mph and I pull on it hard it will act the same way as well, but I can also cruise for 30+ miles with no issues as long as I don't get on the gas hard, I'm so confused... PLEASE HELP, I love this thing too much for it to not run well. Can the jetting and or K&N filter be causing all this BS, it seems to be right, the plugs are beautifuly golden brownish..
make sure your battery connections are tight including ground and that your battery is fully charged, might try going up one jet size on main jet in carb to see if that helps. try a stock set of plugs and wires, If your still stumped id take it to a good shop. might check for intake leaks around the manifold where it attaches to the engine and carb (don't squirt it in front of the carb.)... these are just basic suggestions . Others here might have more spot on ideas. Hope you get it fixed , don't get discouraged that is a great looking ride.
Just replaced the manifold gaskets, charged the battery last night, and made sure everything was clean and tight, actually just finished the after paint assembly this morning. But it was doing this before as well, and thank you... It's my own color and scheme, my street glide looked almost identical.
Ps you might check the petcock screen to see if its clogged. Sometimes after painting some crap can get into the petcock screen and clog it up. Sounds like you have been pretty much after your problem. If you have a trusted mechanic you should call them and explain what you have done and what your bike is doing. If its not your petcock screen , plugs , wires, or main jet on carb I wouldn't know where to steer you next .

Had the same problem with my 98 DWG way back, it turned out to be the Control Module under the seat. Since it only did it at hi-way speeds, the Dealership couldn't figure it out, I had to buy a new module and test it out for myself. They refunded me the price after I told them I figured it out myself....sounds like they haven't changed much.
Had very similar problem. Engine would cut-out at the most inopportune times! It wasn't a constant problem, but one that would show up at various times, under various conditions. There was nothing consistent about it other than that it kept happening. Drove me to distraction because I could not duplicate it. Finally one day after a close-call at an intersection, I decided I fix it come hell or high water. What I finally found was a badly crimped wire in the factory harness. The wire-terminal crimp tool crushed the stranded wire to the point where only a few stands were solid and the rest were separated. Installed new wire terminal and problem solved.
Those are some good ideas there... I was thinking maybe electrical because when it does it, if you pull in the clutch it straight dies. But that also sounds like no fuel, and is why I'm so confused. One time last night it was so bad I had to ride on the side of the road for a lil while while the sputtering worked itself out, normally I just loosen the has cap and it clears up in a few seconds. I know my carb is spotless, just had it apart, but this is the first time I haven't pulled the petcock too, I knew I should have, but the tank is so clean everywhere else, I guess I was hoping....
I'll be back with updates, I'm gonna go clean all the connectors too, never hurts.
Then it'll be time to handle this down shifting issue, sometimes a quick blip of the throttle and it goes right down, other times its on and off the clutch and revving the **** out of it, from what I've read its looking like a pawl adjustment.. any chance someone can scan them pages of the manual and shoot em over ?
Unless you have a better idea of what it may be...
