For longer rides I take my FZ1 with Givi Bags which is considered a poor man's FJR. If I were you I would also look at the Vstrom, even the 650 has plenty of power and gets 55mpg, my dad LOVES his. My Street Bob just doesn't have the comfort for longer rides. I prefer to sit up more and over the bike like on a sport touring bike so for longer rides I take the FZ1. If I am just out playing around by myself or with some friends on cruisers I will ride the Street Bob, but for the major distance long mile days, or my 1.5hr commute I take the FZ1...
A couple of years ago I used to ride a FJR1300 daily.
I consider it to be a rocket on wheels, plenty power available. I missed the 6th gear and the gasmileage wasn't that good either. Rear tire wore out pretty quick.
Mine had an extra big fairing but had some instability at about 130 Mph. (I just love German Autobahns)
It is a great bike, handling is awesome but it ain't a Harley. I liked it as a 'working' machine but it will never give me the joy that my Fat Bob gives me. The FJR has no soul, but that's my opinion. If it works for you..
Might be an option to get a rental for a week or so to find out for yourself if you like it or not.
