Default Dot5 Master to dot4

I have to get a new master cylinder.

Can I get a 9/16 master cylinder that is dot 5 and clean it out real good and put dot 4? 2009 street bobs run dot 4 so I thought it be easier to clean the master than all the lines. Will dot 4 ruin any seals of the dot 5 master?

Thanks for the help

Unless you're experiencing some really bad brake fade problems that are fluid (not pad) related I'd just leave it as is.

The only time I ever got an advantage from using DOT-5 was on a Showroom Stock SCCA race car that had to run the stock brake system; which was a great brake system on the street, but was a real handful after a few laps on a "real" race course even with DOT-5.

Take the master cyl apart and clean all the components with methylated spirits, when dry, lube it all with the correct brake fluid and reassemble.....it will be fine.

You will be fine as stated. The only problem arises when the different fluids are put in at the same time since they will not mix. Neither of them will harm the seals.

I did this same thing on my 05 xl1200r. Had to run denatured alcho through the system to get it all completely out. DOT5 is very different than DOT4. So make sure you get it all out.
