I suppose if the drain hole is clogged with **** it might not drain. I'd be tempted to whip the forks off and have a root around inside and check everything is OK.
There is a little trick you can use to get the caps back on...
With the spring out, place the cap on top of the fork. Turn it to where the thread just catches (check by trying to lift). Now put a pencil mark across the cap and fork. Put the spring in and put the cap on top so the cap line is just slightly behind the fork line. Push down till the cap touches and then rotate a bit and the thread should catch OK. Just saves having to push down and rotate a few times trying to find the bite point.
Hey, thanks for the tips. I left the drain screw off overnight and it dribbled out 8 or 9 oz. The trick using a pencil mark was excellent. I only dropped a couple F-bombs but finally got the caps back on.
The first fork oil change I did on my 02 FXD I installed a fork cap with an allen screw in the top. after draining the oil and re-installing the drain screw just remove the allen screw in the cap and add the required oil. Makes the job so much easier. By the way I use 10w BEL-Ray and fill with 11ozs. of oil. I realize the S/M sez 10.6 ozs. but a couple of techs have told me the .4 difference won't hurt and hasn't in 40k miles.
Obviously you got it back together, but I was going to say....
Dump some fresh oil down the 'empty' tube and see if it drains out the plug. Love having drain plugs.
Just completed this on my 98 Super Dyna. Must've been the original 14 year old crap, because it was black and sour smelling. Used a 1 3/8" Sears socket with a 12 inch extension, pushed it down and the OL worked the ratchet from the other side of the handlebars. By the way, Harbor Freight has an excellent cycle lift for around a c-note.
