Default Will a Dyna work for me?

I am tossed up between a superglide custom and a electraglide standard. I am 5'9' 230lbs. I live in a very back road type of area in CT. The speed limit is 25-35mph. I will be riding 20 miles to work one way, one trip of 50miles all highway once a week and 2-3 hour trips on the week ends. I am not going cross country. I am 45 years old. I am a sort of newbie rider with only one year on the road riding a small jap bike. My buddies have a Dyna lowrider and a softtail springer. Everyone tells me you need some sort of windshield. Is the dyna removable shield ok? The electra glide looks more comfortable and the superglide faster and easier to control? Any help?

Yes the removable shield works well on the Dyna.
The one thing to consider is the EG Standard is a touring bike that can't be stripped down for the bar hopper look. It is a great bike, my in-laws have one and he is about the same size as you. I went with the Superglide because I knew I wouldn't be doing any cross country riding, just staying in the area of a 3 hour ride or so and I'm 6'-1" 270lbs.
You should ride them both before buying one. Is there a dealer near you that rents them?

You will know when you look at it and sit on it which one feels right.

For your riding needs the 'glide would suffice. It's lighter, too, so that helps in corners. Neither would be too big for you, nor too small. I'm about 5" taller than you and the Dyna 'Bob fits me perfect.

For riding to work, you will probably want to get some saddlebags, and a nice Memphis Shades style fairing.

Both will work fine. With what you've stated 40 miles per day x 5 is 200 miles, plus 50 miles trip, plus 2-3 hour trips on weekends...400 miles a week?????? 1,600 miles a month???????...better get the electraglide

I wouldn't even consider the Electraglide for the type of riding you describe........mostly low speed back roads, with no more than a 2-3 hour ride on the weekends. The Superglide is lighter & easier to handle and, as already stated above, you can add a windshield & bags. I've had touring bikes & smaller bikes at the same time & the touring bike usually gets left in the garage unless going on a really long ride. Just too cumbersome for everyday slow riding like you describe.

I agree super glide better for the riding you plan on doing - easier to handle at low speeds and
uneven roads.

I have a 2005 with Boss Bags and HD Quick Detach Windshield. 0

I live in Dutchess County NY and I used to commute to Danbury mostly on the back roads.

I ride up to Lake George and Vermont a couple of times a year also on backroads.

I rode my Dyna to Sturgis in 2005 all highway.

The Dyna is a fairly comfortable verey versatile bike that is good at most things.

Why are you limited to those two bikes? I think you would like a road king for the riding that you describe . I have a buddy who is your size. The King fits him great. He can strip it down to chrome for a cruiser or throw on a full shield and tour. You'll have a lot of people say that you can do it on a super but I thinik you might feel like you won't a little bigger machine under you when you are doing that much riding.

If you are going to put bags on it.......get a bagger.......the dyna is a sportier bike. Some guys put bags on them but if you are not looking for a more high performance look I would go look at a Road King or a Heritage Softail. Both bikes are easy to handle once you get used to them.

You might consider renting one of each before you plunk down your $$
