hi i just bought my first harley not first bike. i got a 07 black super glide.i want to put the screamin eagle slip ons on and was tolled i have to do the stage two tune is this the case or is the dealer trying to make money.
When I bought my 03 WG it had the stock pipes on it. The first thing on my âto doâ list was to install louder pipes. I wanted to keep the bike all HD so I bought the Screaming Eagle I pipes. After looking at the bore through them and asking about the sound they would produce I exchanged them for Screaming Eagle II pipes. The Screaming Eagle I pipes are close to stock sounding and flowing. The Screaming Eagle II pipes are much louder than the Screaming Eagle I pipes. I was also told âthe Screaming Eagle II pipes do flow more than stock pipes and therefore the air/fuel mixture can go lean causing heat related motor damage. HD recommendation was to install the stage I breather kit that would flow more and larger idle jet to maintain the correct air fuel mixture caused by the additional air flowâ. I did that and also removed the mixture plug and set the needle valve. It was worth the trouble as my WG doesnât sound like a Honda anymore! Also, what a difference in performance and sound, now it sounds like a Harley! Did it absolutely positively need the stage I breather kit? I would say yes on the grounds of âbetter safe than sorryâ. Any damage to the motor caused by heat due to over lean conditions will cost much more than the 150 bucks for the stage I kit. I have a carb on my bike, I would think that EFI bikes would need the same modifications to the air fuel.
However, look at a Stage I and download to go with the screamin' eagles. I have that combination on my scoot and I really noticed the difference when it was done.
with the O2 sensor, you shouldn't need to do anything when adding the slip ons. For sure not a stage II download. Just adding pipes is half a stage I mod. It is slight enough of a change, it can be compensated in the ECM automatically (hence the new O2 sensors they came out with in 06 for Dyna's and all models in 07)
well, first of all he only mentions changing out the pipes, not air intake. Also, he won't be buying SE II's.. and, I don't see anything wrong with the soot in your photo. I don't think I have ever seen a spotless exhaust.
My 05 doesn't have the O2 sensor, so I dit a few mods, all stage one (big bore, intake, seII's, and a PCIII). Bike was dyno'd and had a great a/f ratio. I still had soot on the interior of the exhaust.
You may want to do the Stage 1 flash. I have the SE II slipons with stock A/C and at the 10K service the dealer noted that the bike is running lean ('06 Dyna). So I just had it flashed today. Also Santa is leaving me a high-flow A/C under the tree and I would have needed it flashed anyhow.
ok i am haveing to wait now for the SE i just put it in the shop to get the foward brake and gear shift and new handle bars and chrome.
the midpegs were not cutting it,i will get the pipes next.i live in florida and looking foward to putting some miles on it ,i did get some over the weekend.
