Great minds think alike! Nice fit on the headlight.

A cheaper jigsaw can do the trick if... When you pull the trigger you can vary the speed. I do not have the most steady hand, which is why you use a file with a flat edge to smoth the bumps or imperfections. If you use a single speed jigsaw, just go slow with your motion, and let off the trigger and check your work to see your progress and reduce heat. You just ease back into your cut with the blade running. Make sure you hold your windshield steady with your other hand to reduce the vibration, or have a buddy help you. I did it by myself so I could only yell at myself if I screwed up. I used sooooo much tape as overkil, but can't afford to replace if I screwed up. No pressure!

Mine is halfway done, I have to do my final cut and then sand it, except the weather has been to nice to finish it right now.

Yours looks like it turned out nice.

took my switchback windshield to a auto glass place. dude cut it free of charge. gave him $20 tip and he tried to give it back. very professional job. dropped it off around 9 in the morning. called me to come pick it up at noon. didn't take off any hardware or anything.

Easy peasy. Couple more tips - a Dremel with sanding drum works great for eliminating any bumps if you go a bit off course. If you have a lift use it to straighten the bike up - no need to actually raise it, just get it upright. Otherwise the lean angle can mess up your thinking.

Once you get it just right heightwise, put a long level lengthwise resting on the top of the shield. Holding the bubble in the center, measure down from the bottom of the level to the low spot on your seat where your butt nestles in. If you change shields or even bikes that measurement is the height you want your new shield at. Saves all the "do I want it here or there?" stuff. I've done this on three of my bikes and one of my g/fs and the line of eyesight vs. top of shield positioning comes out perfect each time.

My brother had to cut out around the headlight on his springer. The final edge wasn't perfect but we put some black trim on the windshield around the headlight and it finished it off nicely. It was the self stick trim you use as edging on your car door edges and you can get it at any auto parts store.

Was this a "national" chain type place or a "mom and pop" place.

I need about an inch off the top of my windshield and wouldn't mind taking it somewhere like that...

Did you have to call around to find someone that could do it?

Thanks

thanks for this thread. I have been thinking of cutting my windshield a few inches. I like the shape of the windshield cut down.

how about a shot of the finished product.

Here is the final product, but i do want to sand the edge again, and perfect the first and last part of the cut, round it off more. Just be careful on how much you take off, I should have taken off about 2 and a half, but took off 4 for looks and function, then moved it up to compensate.
