Default Self service

for all you guys that service your own bikes, could i ask for a few pointers?
im about to do the 5K service. 2011 FXDWG.

would you change the tranny and drive side fluids as well as the engine oil?
the manual only states motor oil, but is it worth doing the lot?

secondly, do you need a tool to check the tension of the drive belt, or can you do it by eye/feel, as with a chain driven bike?

ive bought a hydraulic cable oiler to lube the clutch and throttle cables,
the rest of the stuff seems straight forward to me.

im used to stripping down rz 2 stroke motors, so i have some mechanical gumption. any other general pointers?

thanks.

I change my motor oil at 2500 miles. Every 3rd time I change the primary and tranny too. So that puts it at around 7500 for the primary and tranny. As for the belt, doing it by eye is fine. No need for some special HD tool.

Change the other fluids too, it's easy and you are already doing the oil anyway and if it's your first 5000 miles then it's due. HD Formula+ isn't expensive, I use it in both tran and primary works great, after change with every third oil change. Amsoil in the motor for me.

This pretty much sums it all up.

Different strokes....

I do all three fluids every 5k. I did get the belt adjustment tool since it should be measured with the bike sitting on the back tire, not jacked up. (Technically should have the rider's weight on the bike as well) At my old age, crawling down on the garage floor is challenging enough. I find the tool makes checking deflection easier. And as I recall it's not expensive.

Same here, and I use Amsoil in the engine and primary, and Amsoil severe gear in the trans.

Check you fall away, check you spokes.
I use a torque wrench for the spokes, and yes use the belt tension tool. it's cheap enough.
Amsoil all the way.
