air cleaner cover doesn't fit need help

Yes you need the washer, it goes between the star shaped mounting bracket and the air filter, mine came with one. Just go out and buy one, I woulldn't be bending the mounting bracket.

The washer sounds like the best solution. Any particular thickness? Or just stick a couple in there til the screws catch?

you only need one standard washer.

I put a 1/8" spacer between the element and bracket so it will make the star stick out farther. I used a nylon spacer
