Hey I am trying to paint a few odds and ends, battery cover etc.. Anyway I put thr first coat of rustoleum gloss black on and it looked great. Waited 24 hours like directions said and got terrible paint defect. It was supper rough and looked like crap. What am I doing wrong? Help please!
im assuming the paint cracked? if your painting plastic, rattle can paint doesn't stick as well as other paint so when you apply a new coat it breaks through the first coat and basically peels it off the plastic.
Been there. Start over and this time wait at least 48 hours. You can do a second coat within 10 minutes of the first, or wait at least 48 hours. Same rule goes for 3rd coat.
I usually do a coat, wait 10 minutes, do a 2nd, wait 10 minutes, do a 3rd. Then let it set for a couple days before messin with it.
A 24 hour wait does something weird to it when you spray it again. Like its not fully cured and youre coating it again.
Im not a painter by any means, but I do use the stuff occasionally and this works well.
Im assuming you sanded and cleaned it real well.

Autozone, and probably most other parts places carry rattle can paint for plastic. I did a bunch of plastic parts, like side cover trim, on a Vulcan about 2 years ago. It looks excellent and has held up well.
I sanded it and painted it three coats. Of course sand between each coat. Your stuff will look good.
I am not using it on plastic. I'm trying to paint the metal strip on the battery box. I did sand it prior to first application and like I said above the first coat went on fine. Its when I started the second coat (roughly 24 hours later) that things went awry. I did my horn cover with no problem but only did two coats 10 minutes apart. I got all of the paint off and plan on trying again. RLE thanks for the help, I was pretty pissed when that coat when on and started looking like ****. Anyone have any ideas on why this happens?
Not sure if the Plasti-Dip has the gloss black I'm looking for.
Not sure if this plasti-dip stuff will work or give me the the gloss black look I want.
It's called recoat sensitivity and it's typical of many enamels. I'm not all that familiar with the Rustoleum you're using but recoat sensitivity is what you're dealing with. There is window of time in which you can recoat but once that window is past you're SOL until the finish cures for some period. That period can be hours, days, or even weeks depending on the product.
I'm surprised you had this problem if you were following the instructions furnished with the product you're using.
