My spokes need a good cleaning and polishing. It appears that's the one thing the previous owner didn't keep up with. I'm just not sure what type of material they are (stainless, chrome, galvanized, ect. )
Thanks O, I have stainless polish but I'm not sure if it's safe to use on the spokes, they have some pretty good tarnish on them and it's going to take some scrubbing. I just don't want to use a polish that's too harsh. That's why I'd like to know what they are made of.
can you get a pic up here for us? maybe we can help you more.
zinc polish is the same as chrome and nickel polish. just get a chrome polish and do it. do not use abrasives.
If you can, lift the wheel you're working on off the ground so you can easily rotate the wheel to get to the spokes.
I suggest you buy a bag of 0000 steel wool and saturate a piece of it with whatever cleaner you decide, and polish the spokes then clean the residue with a soft cloth. I used Mothers aluminum polish on everything chrome or aluminum and finish off with Semi-chrome polish.
You'll have several people on here say not to used the steel wool but I've used this process for forty plus years with out harm. The 0000 steel wool if kept wet with polish is about the consistancy of 2000 grit wet and dry sandpaper,so it's not gonna hurt anything.
this is on my "to-do" list here in a few min. picked up some at walmart for under $4.....
i have a couple other small bottles of Mothers chrome polish, and Turtle wax chrome polish as well.... BUT it was mentioned to me to try and get most of the tarnish off as well as some of the light rust from moisture FIRST, then come back over it with a polish or a wax and it will help prevent some of that stuff later on.
