Once in a while when I start my bike the starter gear seems to break free from the flywheel (I'm not sure what the starter engages to, so I'll call it a flywheel until corrected) and of course grinds. I did a search and read up a bit on the issue, but wanted to find out if there was any way to do preventative maintenance. Starter adjustment? The starter gear is softer than the flywheel gear, and I can replace just the starter drive and not the whole damned thing, right? Any idea as to how long the starters last after they start going?
Either the bendix , if such a thing still exists, or the starter clutch, it's a small piece in the starter which is a pain to get at, but it happened to me under warranty and i've been ok for three years since.
Just fixed that same issue on my 08 FXDC.
On my bike the part is called the starter sub assembly and it cost $85.
I had to pull my battery box, then a couple of bolts and wires to remove starter....
Now we need to change out a Brothers 1999 night train starter....We where told, dont try and rebuild it, just replace with new, about $280 with tax.
On the night train the starter is a bitch to get at.....
Mine does the same thing every now and then. Usually when the bike is warmed up. All of my research points to the starter clutch as the guilty culprit. I will be changing mine in the near future.
