Great site, lots of good info. Sooooo.........
I have an '03 wide glide with the 21" front tire setup. Its my first Harley, so working on them is still a new experience here.
Not real keen on how unstable the front end seems to be when touring over 60 mph. Am thinking about changing at least the front tire for something with a wider stance. $$$ is an issue here, so don't really want to change the front end but definitely want more meat on the ground on the front. I read through many posts but haven't run across anything dealing with this, so any help from those here with much more HD experience would be greatly appreciated.
I have an 04 WG....make sure the thing has had an alignment. You would be suprised how stable it is after lining up the bike.
I ride mostly highway (80-85 mph) so I like my bike solid.
Check alignment, spokes and neck bearing.
I second that...the wide glide is plenty stable. I remember thinking the same thing when I rented a Wide Glide (first time riding one). I couldn't imagine that the skinny front tire would be stable, especially on the highway. But to be honest....I really don't notice any difference when compared to something like my last bike (a yamaha V-star 1100)...it had a considerably smaller wheel and wider tire up front...and it was no more stable than my WG.
You may see an improvement in stability by going to a Metzeler or Avon tire, if you are still riding the Dunlop. Front/Rear alignmentand frontend fall-away on a Dyna is a must, no matter whats on the ground.
If by alignment you mean whether it is tracking true (rear wheel tracking behind the front) it seems to be. I've had others follow me and it tracks true. I've been told its not good to mix brands of tires, and these Dunlaps have only 2k niles on them. So if I can mix them I will. The front is a MH90-21 D402 F Dunlop. Which tire can I replace this with and gain some width on the original rim? I'm not so concerned with losing any height in the front as long as its only an inch or so.
