Default Apes

Looking for some advise. I've been checking out the picture of Wide Glides with apes and I love the look. The problems is I'm brand new to motorcycles and have only owned one for about 6 months so I don't know what I need to order. What height bar, risers, will I need new brake lines or clutch cables which bars to buy, total newbie!! I don't want to go to the dealer, I prefer to help out the little guy with my orders and service needs when ever possible. Any pictures or recommendations would greatly be appreciated.

I just got some from Hill Country Customs and they were great. They know everything you need and shipped it fast. I think I paid $500 to my door for all the lines wires and bars with risers and bushings. You might be able to do it cheaper if you get all the measurements yourself and bye it all separate but it probably won't be much cheaper. Mine was a little challenging because I have a narrow front end and didn't want bars wider than my forks but you should have more options with a wide glide front end.

Don't be intimidated by it bro. You can do it your self very easily. Id recommend checking out Burly brand kits. They will cover all the wiring and cables you will need based on the size of apes you choose. Just remember if you run a set of 4 in risers and 14 in apes you'll need to get a kit that works for a total of 18in rise. You can do this in about 8 hours taking your time. I'd also look for a set of bars that are pre drilled and dimpled. This will make it a bit easier when running your wires. When doing that just run you a long string and tie your wires to it and pull them through. They key to it would be just taking your time and devoting a day to it. And limit your self to a six pack lol. Good luck

Got mine from Hill Country as well. They have lots of options as far as pre wired or just ordering the wire extensions.

I'm 6'3" and went with 16" apes on top of 3" risers(the part connecting the bars to the trees). That height is perfect for me.

In a nutshell you'll need longer: wire extensions(these are the brake lights, signals, etc..) clutch cable, brake line, throttle & idle cables

If you are at all mechanically incline, its a simple DIY. Don't be scared by bleeding the brake lines, youtube is your friend! Good Luck! (check sig pic for my apes)

it easy to do. if your new to ridin' get 12in bars and 2in riser. Get 1 1/4 fat bars looks way better than 1in. Make sure u get poly bushings make apes WAY better. Harley sales 12in. bars now and risers and poly bushings. Good luck

I went with Hill Country also. Wasnt too bad to do myself, im on a Fat Bob though, went with 16 inch. I bought my risers from J and P and an eagle spirit cover, they were 2 inch if I remember right.

You just tell Hill Country what size you want to go with, theyll set you up with the right length of clutch cable and brake cable, junction block for your brake lines. +1 on the youtube kudos, definitely helped me, a few forum members have vids on there on how to do ape wiring, etc. I had dual front brakes so it was a little different, more brakes to bleed. Definitely get a service manual for your bike before you start though, without that Id have gotten lost, theres some affordable manuals for your bike on ebay or amazon.

Like others said dont be afraid to do this. I never worked on a bike and this was one of the 1st installs i did. Big thing is just take your time, no need to rush this. Also good diagram of the connectors helps if you have to de-pin the connectors to pull the wires out of the bars. As for what height you need and will be comfortable will be up to you. Best thing is to grab a buddy for some help. Then you sit on the bike, with your eyes closed put your hands out to what you think would be comfortable. Then just have you buddy measure up from the trees to see how tall you want and the width of your hands. I'm 6' and 12-14" bars would work well.

By the look of your avatar it looks like you have a 2010-12 WG. So to go with 12-14" bars you wont need wire extentions. You will need new throttle, brake, and clutch cables. I am running stock clutch and brake cables from a street bob. My throttle and idle cables are +6 Magnum Shielding black diamond cables. If you have a 2012 wg i heard you dont have to de-pin the connectors because they are small enough to pull through the bars.
