Nothing really special just really basic.. Some half inch rod, some 14ga. Steel and a few hours of time. I painted it with that damn finicky, appliance paint. I should have just paid to powder coat it, but I wanted to get it on the bike. What you guys think? Gots to have something handmade on the bike right,lol.. I'm not a huge fan yet but it gives my wife something to lean on and somewhere for me to tie my lunch bag on for work.
I was able to cheat, because I had side plates from a Harley sissy bar. I just traced the plates on some 14ga. And cut them out on a band saw and ground the edges smooth.
If your wife would like some padding just add a piece of that 14ga steel and attach pad.
Yep, that's the plan. I have some nice 1" thick, really dense/soft foam that will be perfect, then Ill just get a piece of vinyl to wrap it. I will make the pad removable. I was going to weld in a cross bar to attach to but I was having a hard time keeping the whole thing square and then got impatient. I wanted it to be the same 1/2" bar with a nice curve in it for looks and not a flat piece of metal with some holes in it. If I build another one, I will make a jig to keep the side plates locked in at the right width and square and then I can bend the bar and weld it up. That half inch bar doesn't budge very much till you heat it up, but then its hard to work with a hot piece. I will be more patient next time..
Well done Dirknar
Just get yourself some 2x10 and rip it to the proper width, or some pieces of 2x6 like I did here, easy enough to make a jig.
Always better when the parts are made by your own hand. Frankly if anyone gets critical, just tell them to show you how to do it better.
