Garmin Zumo bought at ebay. Haven't used it much tho. It's weather-proof for MC use, other than that, it's prolly the same as other units. Until you know exactly what you want/use it for, I say go 'inexpensive'.
Zumo here. Water proof plus Xm radio with antenna. Had it on my Fatboy for trips. Used ear buds to listen but now using it on the Ultra and have it plugged into the Aux on the radio and listen thru the speakers.
I have tried my car unit in my Ram Mount X-grip and it is about impossible to see. Dusk or dawn is fine, but the rest of the time the screen is washed out badly. Is the Zumo screen any different?? I also heard the Zumo is more vibration resistant. Don't know if it's true
I have been using my Zumo 550 for years w/no probs...been in some nasty rain storms with it too!
I use the http://www.poi-factory.com for the latest HD dealership lists
To me it's the same feature as the HD Motor company branded model.
I prefer the Techmount bracket over the "ball" mount style RAM mount.
There are "newer/better" Zumo (motorcycle) models out now.
I keep the HD-Dealership POI, GPS software and maps updated.
The Zumo 550 is discontinued. The newer models have a lot more features.
The flagship model, the Garmin Zumo 665 is loaded with TONS of features.
I really like the feature set, display and user interface of Garmin products.
I personally have a Nuvi 350, but I can speak from LOTS of our customers' experience that you don't need an expensive GPS on your motorcycle - you just need a decent mounting system (and if waterproofing is a concern and you want more than a ziplock baggie, you might need one extra part). Check out the eCaddy GPS mounts: http://www.leadermotorcycle.com/motorcycle-gps-mounts/ (note, new item coming in just weeks!)
I picked up a Garmin Nuvi 50LM from WalMart for a hundred bucks. Ram mount and a direct wire electrical connector from GPSgeek.com wired to the aux deutsch connector under the seat. You can use it as a speedometer readout and it will track your top speed, moving average speed etc. Good maps and voice direction if you can hear it on a bike. Lifetime map updates. I'm really happy with it.
I have the Nuvi 1490. Got it new for $150. Has a large screen and works great. Even came with lifetime map updates. I use a RAM handlebar mount that I have used on the past 5 Garmin's I've owned. Installed a handlebar mounted power point/cigarette lighter to keep it charged. Great GPS and works great on the bike. It is not water proof like the more expensive Garmin's ($600 plus) but I have a windshield to block most moisture and a baggie to put over it if it is a downpour!
Grumpy
The Zumo has some nice motorcycle specific features. Water proof, controlled with your left hand, and easily used with gloves on. That being said, on my bike, I don't have one. Most of the time I just ride and don't really care where the road leads. That's the best way for me to enjoy the ride. If I get lost and really need to find my way then I pull over and look it up on my smart phone.
