My bike has always had a little bit of trouble starting. When cold, it'll crank over for a few seconds, belch once through the air cleaner, then spring to life. It does this very consistently, and will do similar to this as well when it's warm if it's been sitting for a handful of minutes. It charges fine when I hit the Run switch but acts like it doesnt get any fuel for several cranks.
I'm not particularly worried about it, since it does this every time and always starts, but I'm curious if it's normal and/or what I can do about it. I have a TTS Mastertune and thought about messing with the Cranking Fuel table but I'm not convinced this would do any good. Any thoughts?
Who tuned it when the TTS was originall installed? How does it run once it's warmed up? Any decel pop? How do you start it? Do you crank it right away or wait for the lights to go out?
Interesting. I'll try starting it immediately and see what happens. I always wait for the light to go out. I did the TTS tune myself w/o a dyno, but it started that way before I had the TTS. I was more wondering if the TTS could be used to help with this problem.
Mine started doing that until i changed the fuel filter and it has startd first crank ever since. Whats the mileage on your bike.?
Here's a pic of my filter @ 35 K miles...
maddghost I've got an 08 super, was it a big job changing out your filter? My bike has 4400 miles but it's been around for four years and sometimes belches through the breather too. That filter looks pretty bad.

I was going to take it on myself but I let HD do it for me. I guess I chickened out in case i broke something which would have been a pita going to get parts I need and possibly waiting days for said parts to arrive = too much down time for a 30$ job and a 20$ filter IMO.
My bob still blows gass out the filter now and then but HD tells me it's because of the added compression from the 103" kit.
This morning I tried starting it immediately after hitting the run switch, and it starts exactly the same.
Now I'm wondering if it could be the fuel filter. My bike has about 8000 miles on it, and I wouldn't think the filter should be in too bad of shape, but I guess you never know. It runs fine once it's started, no other problems.
Changing the fuel filter would be easy, if the fuel pump wasn't wedged inside the fuel tank submerged in gas. Maddghost, do I read you right in that the dealer charged $30 + $20 for the filter?
Another possibly-useless data point: if I hold the throttle wide open (which prevents the injectors from firing) and crank it over for a few seconds, then release the throttle and start it normally, it behaves exactly the same. It's always so consistent. I don't know if this test would have an effect on proving or disproving a clogged fuel filter or bad map table. Thoughts?
You need to adjust the map on your TTS. There is a sticky TTS thread, try posting it there as there are some of the best tuners in the world that are in that post
