I'm not familiar with the TTS so I can't help there. If you're going to look at the filter, check the fuel line in the tank. They have been known to rub against the inside of the tank and start leaking. Low fuel pressure will make for a hard start.
I'm going to rip into my tank before long and check for issues with my fuel pump. I'll replace the fuel filter (whether it needs it or not) and check/replace o-rings.
I'm a little worried about a pinhole or small leak in the fuel line that goes from the pump to the check valve at the bottom of the tank. That's not a cheap part to replace, according to the parts manual, because it comes as a whole assembly. I hesitate to even ask, but is there anything that can be done with a pinhole in a cheap corrugated plastic fuel hose?
there is a thread here that will explain how to change it out and i think there is a cheaper hose you can use or replace with the stock line but it will happen again eventually look up member ws6formula he has the write up i believe...
oh and my bike does the same ****, i gotta open mine up soon to swap out the filter and hose ...
I just started having this problem too a few days ago. Little over 30K miles on my 2011 and it's the same story. When cold, no problem, but if I've been running and shut her down, to get gas or something, and then try to fire her back up I get a pop out the AC and she doesn't want to start. Looks like fuel line and filter time for me as well. Lovely.
Mine does that when its hot and I shut it down for a couple of minutes like getting gas. I've found I don't hold the starter button down long enough cause I'm used to just hitting it and having the bike respond when its cold. If I remember and hold it till it starts, there is no problem with backfire.
