I have a 06 dyna street bob, I changed the fork oil to HD SE. The forks "bang" when I hit a bump. it seems like it bangs on rebound. I put in the right amount of oil. are the Harley springs junk? I have 52,000 miles on the bike. I am a light rider, 140 lbs. should I switch back to the lighter oil? It clunked with the stock oil too. What's up??
Are the forks actually bottoming out? That would be pretty rare except in hard bumps.
It's more likely your neck bearing/washer. Harley put out a service bulletin (M-1215), and your year is covered under this. Has the upgrade been done? If I recall correctly, the main symptom was a front end clunk.
Go back to the stock oil and see if the problem is still there. I put in Progressive fork springs and used the SE oil but didn't like how the front end responded. Put back the stock oil and it's fine. The explanation I got was that the heavier oil won't let the forks react as fast as with stock stuff.
do some search on setting up the proper sag for your weight. i think you are hitting the top on the rebound because you are too light. Maybe try cutting the spacer down a half of inch
The thicker oil will give you a rougher ride. Do a search. Lots of threads on here about 'clunk' and proper adjustment. Get the front in the air and test 'fall away.'
