Default How often?

How often do you guys running an open air filter go between cleaning and re-oiling? I think K&N recommends 5000 miles, seems like a lot to me.

when it gets dirty, 5k sounds about right. You want it a little dirty as it filters better

I do it every spring just before riding season as regular maintenance. Then as needed.

I do it If it gets rained on or alot of sun and looks kinda pale compared to the red oil look. Otherwise I'll do it at oil change intervals.

I asked the service dept this over the weekend, They told me around 2500 or more depending on how dirty it is. I also checked numerous postings and it looked like 5000 miles or once a year (if you dont get to 5k)was the average..
The web site showed some nasty looking filters,

Believe or not, I clean it the beginning of the riding season, pretty much once a year, normally I ride 7,000miles.

I do mine at the beginning of the riding season... but anymore the red color doesn't stick around very long... I think I'm going to get a new filter. And possibly plan on getting a new one every 2 or 3 years...

don't over oil it. When it gets dirty or every 5,000 seems to work for me.

I have 2 filters and it's nice. That way I can clean/oil one and have it ready to bolt on when I need to change over.

But my answer to the OP - I go every oil change. Which is between 3.5 & 5K miles.

Last time I cleaned mine I thought about doing this. B/c of drying time, it is difficult for a daily rider to do air filter maintenance w/o missing a day of riding.

Mine isn't totally open. Not real sure if whater is getting to the filter or not. Have heard that once it gets rained on ya gotta re-oil it.
