Boy, can I sympathize with all you guys - never used to wear a helemt in the old days since there aren't any helmet laws here in NH, but with my new bike I figured I ought to have one - esp. when traveling thru adjacent states that do have laws. Tried a bunch on at the local HD dealer - either too small (I know they're supposed to be tight, but has to at least go on!) or too big - HUH? My head never used to be a problem, and regular sized hats fit fine! So rather than spend megabucks at the dealer for something I'd never use, I started researching on the web. On the first site I ordered a mainstream brand 1/2 helmet following the manufacturer's directions for sizing and when I got it, yup, way too small. Sent it back. Tried again and figured this time I'd go real cheap but still DOT and got a 1/2 beanie style w/small detachable visor from Moto-DirectUSA (also available on eBay):

http://stores.skipjack.com/Moto-Dire...lmets%3ABeanie

They have other styles and finishes, too.

And it fits! Followed their website guidelines measuring my head three times just as I did before, so not sure why the difference from this vendor. But for only $25.95, I got a flat black (to match my street bob), DOT fiberglass helmet with a moderate mushroom effect (inevitable I guess). Looks identical in shape, finish, interior padding, and construction to one that I saw at the dealer for $125 (but w/o the HD logo)!! And a face shield can be attached. Couldn't be happier, but haven't had a chance to ride this winter, so can't comment on wind effects with it.

I have an AGV Carbon Aramid Composite Helmet. I think it is of the R1 family. It is light and comfortable to wear. The venting keeps your head cool. Nobody likes a wet sweaty head. It is best to try on some helmets. They may say they are the same size but may vary in comfort.

The other thing I hate about DOT helmets is the straps they use. They always feel like someones trying to squeeze my head. My beenie only has the one strap and I like it 100 times more. Do any of you with the CF helmets have the one strap

If you really want a shock research what the requirments are for a helmet to meet DOT specs. If you are truelyworried about safety the invest in a Snell rated helmet. Not as cosmetic but leaps and bounds ahead in the Safety department. <snip>
Don't believe the hype. SNELL helmets perform worse than DOT only helmets.

Ok you have got to work with me here on this. Snell is the ONLY rating allowed in racing all pro racing. Yet a DOT helmet which is tested using a melon. Is a safer helmet. Ok I've been blown up a few time when I was in Iraq but your going to have to break in down for me.

I was looking for a helmet that looked good. I couldn't find one until I found this site. http://www.skullscreamers.com/Their helmets fit good and look good. They are custom made with 3D graphics.

One thing. When I got the helmet, on the back under the DOT sticker it said Daytona Helmet. So I went to their site. http://www.daytonahelmets.com/Default.aspx. It is the exact helmet without the 3D graphics. It cost less then Skull Screamers either way they don't sell one shell fits all.

These studies only came out last year and the SNELL standard has been accepted as the holy grail for quite a while. Both Harry Hurt and Motorcyclist ran tests demonstrating the SNELL helmets are in fact too stiff and transfer more g forces to your head than a DOT only helmet. Hopefully the AMA will get with the program and stop using SNELL as one of their three acceptable certifications for helmets.

Helmet makers make so many shapes of helmets, you have some that are egg shaped, oval, round and so on. We all have different shapes of heads, the only way I know to get a good helmet is to go try it on and leave it there for 10 minutes or so to see if it is going to give you a headache or not. Snell and DOT, from what I remember reading about snell v dot they were making the case that snell approved helmets are so set up for really severe hits that they dont crush well in light to moderate crashes and therefore cause the rider more damage. Made sense to me, here goes the soapbox, what doesn't make sense is not wearing a good helmet, gloves, jacket, protective pants and boots. I just don't get it, seems like way too many are concerned with "the look" and not the level of protection. Something like 40 % of helmet impacts occur around the jaw/cheek area. I always hear guys bitchn about how much the squids raise our insurance rates, wonder how much of that is self inflicted by harley riders that are too cool to wear responsible gear. I can better understand a 20 year old being stupid on a bike, seems to go with the age, but a married guy with people depending on him? Makes no sense, it's dangerous out there and people should minimize the risk when they can. Ok, off the soap box, do what you will, it's your life. I'll wave at you helmeted or not...and won't even be back here complaining if you don't wave back.
