Default New Battery

Installed new battery in my 09 LowRider 2 days ago. Went for a 40 mi ride today (mostly highway), after she cooled down I hooked up the battery tender. Checked it 1/2 hour later, in charge mode (constant yellow light). Gave it another 1/2 hour still in charge mode, have never had a tender in charge mode this long! Another 15 min and it's still charging, plus tender is very warm so I unplugged it. So my question is why since it's a new battery did it charge for so long? And second when I checked it with a volt meter why is it reading 13.03v instead of 12.7v. Appreciate any input.

It is working correctly. Go to the Battery Tender website and read how it works. Also read the FAQs.

When the battery is almost charged the charger is giving minimal charge, don't worry.

Run a meter on your battery - should be @ ~+12.7V when full...

According to the Harley-Davidson SM:

12.8v=100% charged
12.6v=75% "
12.3v=50% "
12.0v=25% "

On my battery tender the red light is the charge mode,the yellow light(steady on) is the float mode,sounds like your battery is fully charged to me.

The battery tender will cycle on and off as needed. If you have a Jr., which is what I'm sure most people use, it's not going to charge very quickly even if the battery is low. I wouldn't worry about it too much, it is a float charger after all. When in doubt check it with a meter.

A fully charged 12 volt battery will measure 12.9 volts!
At 12.7 volts the battery is 25% discharged!

AND good lord! - Don't use a bike mounted gauge to get your volt reading!
