Another lesson learned.
I got an 07 wide glide about 2 months ago. I bought it off a Ford used car lot. The salesman knows nothing about motorcycles. Said a guy traded it in on a truck and that they usually don't take bikes on trade, but it was in such good shape and low miles that they decided to take it.
This is the first bike I've had in 22 years. I rode all through high school and college then I had to quit. I never worked on a motorcycle, but my brother is a mechanic and a biker so I can call him with problems.
Anyway, the salesman told me it was stock except for the seat, sissy bar and Samson BG3 pipes. I put Speed dealer custom pegs, grips and toe pegs on it, lowered the rear end with 11" progressive shocks, and changed the oil. The bike had 514 miles on it at the lot, so I figure it has never had the oil changed.
It has plenty of power and I really didn't need a performance gain, but I am 5'8 or so and my knee was constantly riding the huge oval air cleaner cover.....making it hard to reach the rear brake pedal.....so I wanted a low profile air cleaner and figured I would do that and get it tuned. The outlaw hi-flow 587 came in today and I got my tools together and went to the garage. Pulled the cover off and wth? I go to get my Service manual and the filter under the cover ain't the one in my manual. Its an SEII I suppose stamped harley davidson round tall slightly conical.
I guess I should have checked before ordering. A smaller cover may have taken care of my problem. The Harley filter's rubber trim was all dry rotted anyway. Now I'm wondering what else this guy did to the bike. Did he have it tuned after the pipes and air intake upgrade. Hell, it might have upgraded cams for all I know.
I went ahead and installed the 587 with the polished stainless steel plate and it is about an inch to an inch and a half closer to the motor now. I like that. My brother told me the only way to really find out what the guy did is to take it to a dealer and hook it up to a dyno. Would a Dynojet Power Vision tell me anything?
I'm learning.
