There is another company that makes an upgraded version of the stock tensioner too. It is made of a different material. More like the primary tensioner. They are supposed to be a lot more durable and wear a lot better. I'm not positive on their name, buy I think it is Cyco. There was a post in the engine tech section. Half the price of HD tensioners too.

Well, it depends. You'll need to check crankshaft runout to see if it is in spec less than .005, many recommend .003 or less. Gears can be noisy too. The less expensive way is to go with the hydraulic tensioner upgrade. Just make sure you get the kit that changes BOTH inner and outer chains to the new style. If you can do this yourself, you're looking at $900 or so. About $1500 for a shop to do it. Good luck!
Good thing you checked though El. I checked mine at about 13k when I found out about this stupid mess of a problem. they did have wear but not too bad yet. A little more than half the pads were left.
