I have a quick question. I just acquired a 2005 Harley Dyna FXDCI and started to give it a service today. I was shocked to find only around 0.75L of engine oil drained out (there will be some still in the filter). There should be around 2.4L. Now I'm worried
What's the likelihood of engine damage? A certainty or might I be lucky?
I started it a couple of times and couldn't hear mechanical noise, but then that pipe is LOUD.
That's why it's a good idea to use a tranny fluid that's a different color than the engine oil,I use Spectro or Belray which is red. Check your engine dipstick for your oil level before going any further.
Er.. I removed the horizontal plug? There was no oil showing on the dipstick before I dropped the oil.. and it took 2.4 litres to get it near the top mark on the dipstick, which suggests the engine was empty after I drained the oil? I think it's the right plug!
Your fine. There is roughly 3/4 of a quart that doesn't drain out of the engine so you still had lots in there.
As long as oil is circulating your fine.
I like to do all the oils at the same time, so it doesnt really matter to much which plug I pull because I pull them both.
As for damage? I'm thinking if it has been like that for a while it would maybe create extra ware on rings bearings etc.
I removed the plug that points horizontally, which is No. 1 in the pic..
I think that's the right plug.
Shredding Rubber.. thanks, you made me feel a lot better! Can anyone confirm that there's nearly a quart that doesn't drain?
7mag.. there's a little oiliness on the underside of the motor but nothing that would worry me.
Yes,#1 is engine oil. All you can do is fill it and ride it at this point and check your oil level every few hundred miles,if no excessive usage you're good to go.

Ah, excessive usage of oil would indicate a worn engine. I didn't think of that. Maybe there'd be blue smoke too?
Thanks RAWHIDE07.
I'll be doing the oils maybe tomorrow or Thursday.
