I would think if it was burning oil you would see excessive smoke, especially if it's burn it fast the last owner may have just not put enough oil in when it was last changed, hopefully not to many miles ago. But I think as long as there was still oil circulating and it was not running dry, damage should be minimal or none at all.
Hate to break the news to you but some 05 FXD had some wrong valve guide seals installed from the factory. There was a tech service bulletin out on this so check with a dealer on your bike. These seals will induce oil consumption.
Do a compression check to see if the walls are scorn, and that the valves are seating properly. I am not a mechanic. Just throwing out ideas for you.
Great suggestion, this will tell the condition of the cylinders.
Also check for shavings in the oil you drained and any heat discoloration of the block. It's the heat (from lack of adequate lubrication) that will kill it and if it hasn't been hot then there probably isn't any significant damage.
I did an oil and filter change today, then let it idle for 5 minutes. There was no blue smoke! No smoke at all
I can't ride the thing yet as I'm awaiting a couple of things. When it's on the road I will get a compression check done.. that idea had already occurred to me.
I'll be keeping an eye on oil consumption too. I'm feeling optimistic though.. no blue smoke has to be a good sign.
That why the aftearket makes what's called an oil scavenger. It's to pump out the oil still in the engine. if you look up how the oil circulates through the engine you will see.
No blue smoke is good. Ride er
