sorry, I'm a little confused here. What wide tire kit are you talking about? Does Harley make one? What year(s) is it for? I have a 1996 Dyna that I would like to beef up a little. Thanks.

It's just for the '06 Dynas. It's an upgrade from the factory 160mm tire to a 180mm tire. The kit includes the tire and some needed brackets to install the wider tire.

Thanks for the response so far, seems to me a better choice to do the forwards!
The forwards are really nice. Next time you are at the dealer, sit on a Wide Glide.

I just bought an 06 WG. The dealer swapped out the 160 ( which is a brand new tire ) for the 180, and rebated the price of the new 160. The total cost was a little over $130-that includes parts and labor. I did not pay full price. You should get the dealer to buy back the 160 as a new tire.

The 180 really looks nice. I'm not saying it rides any better, it just fills out the rear of the bike and looks menacing on the street.

If you are ever going to consider the switch, I suggest you do it with a new bike.

If you can get the same deal as rde, then you might want to consider it, otherwise, for a few mm in width difference, the cost is pretty high. Better to get it done when you need the new tire if you're really set on it. Going much wider than the 180 doesn't make much sense. I think the widest thing HD puts on their bikes is a 200 MM on the Deuce and there is probably a good reason for that. Much more than that you begin to run into clearance problems and there's only so much more room to fit a tire in on a stock bike.

Look at most of the Jap sport bikes which make much more use of their tread patch than a Harley ever will. Very few of them have a really wide tire and for good reason. You can only use so much of tread width. The wide tires may look cool, but chances are you'll have a better chance of finding the right size tire when it goes on a trip if you stick to a more stock size.

I would spend money on the forward controls. It makes the ride so much more comfortable. As far as the wide tire, I would have done the $130 deal. (as described below) Now in order to get both for the same price, I would shop around for the forward controls. The Harley controls sell for ~$327. You can save 20% on that price at Surdykes.com. There are also many after market kits for around $220 to $250. Good luck!

I love the Street Bob...but have always been a big WG fan, so I bought what I loved. But in the process I did sit on a bunch of other bikes. Funny thing is, I got so used to forward controls (on my old Yamaha) that I couldn't get comfortable on any other bike...even bikes with forward controls. The combination forward controls and mini apes was just perfect...and I, too, am about 5' 11".
I saw a Low Rider at a dealer a few weeks back and it had the wide tire kit...it looked really nice..but wasn't such a huge difference from the stock 160 on the bike next to it...I'd say go with the forward controls, and wait on the tire for the first change.
BTW...not sure where you're located, but Williams HD in Huntington county, NJ had a Bob sitting in the showroom last week. Bet it won't be there long!
Good luck.

Todd
