....I'm sure this will be as irritating to some of you as a oil thread, but I need some advise. I'm a 1st time Harley owner (2012 StreetBob). I know that H-D 's bike are set lean from the factory and I have always had popping/backfire on deceleration. I just installed V&H 3" slip ons, and the popping/backfiring is now unbearably loud. Is there anything I can do to remedy this without having to use a fuel programmer? I don't know if the dealership can do a reflash on the PCM, or if they are aloud to do to EPA reasons. I have a hook up on a local indy that's supposed to be "the go to guy". I don't want to do anything that will void my warrany by not goig to the dealer. Any suggestions?
A PCM would definitely make it better. I know the dealer has a download, but I don't have any experience with it. As for the warranty I wouldn't worry about it. If you are and something comes up remove the PCM before you take it in.
Different dealers give diffent answers but the most common one is: they WILL void the warranty if damage is caused to the engine and the dealer has not tuned it and in some cases done the installation. I didn't want to have to deal with any nonsense so I bought all my parts online, then took them to the dealer and I bent over the counter and let them do the full stage 1 install and tuning. Guess what though, i have no issues and i have some piece of mind. If you're worried about cost, look for a fuelpak on eBay. It's not as good as a PCv, but it'll provide you with some fuel management.
your warranty will still be valid even with after market pipes and AC, the warranty is on the specific items in your engine cams etc etc, they would have to prove that there was a direct link to the failure from adding pipes and a AC, now if you tune it and your go to guy knows his stuff this would not in a million years cause issues or failure of your motor so the warranty should stand.
Before the tuner option, make certain that the throttle cable isn't holding the throttle open even the tiniest bit. There should be no tension on it, ( but not "loose "either,) when you close the throttle.
On my bike I can irritate the neighbors with decel popping just by just leaning the heal of my hand against the throttle when slowing, holding it open just a fraction. If I don't, there's no decel whatsoever.
I just installed V&H 3" slip ons, and the popping/backfiring is now unbearably loud.
You have changed the exhaust from stock without any consideration to your fuel management system settings. Your bike is still adjusting your fuel to the stock exhaust requirements and the poping is the result from it. You need something to adjust your fuel for the pipes that you have installed.
The download will not help you, and it's a waste of money. You need to add some fuel at low throttle position to cool down the exhaust. You might want to talk to the folks at Fuel Moto.

Aside from a fuel programmer, the only device that might work is an XIED. About $100, easy to install in a few minutes and will add fuel. If if doesn't do the job you can always sell them. Check http://www.nightrider.com/ for info.
