If you are 6"1" I think some apes a little taller might suit you better, but that is just my opinion...I'd say at least 14", but I believe that bigger is better...
Do it. It we be money well spent.
I'm 5'7 and have them on my 03 FXD. I bought the bikeused and italready had the bars installed by the previous owner, done by HD.
Nostretching. Much more of a relaxed position. very comfortable and gives the bike a realgood look.
My son has an 04 FXDI in silver, same as yours, and he just upgraded this last week. I'll try to post a pic.
I have the 56079-93T bars. He bought the 56079-93 bars. No difference except his are chrome plated stainless.
As long as you are not doing internal wiring or braided cables then these are theparts you'll need in addition to the bars.
You need the 38661-00 clutch cable kit(this is the wideglide cable). You need the 45112-96 brake cable (also a wide glide cable). You'll need 4 of the 70345-84 plastic cable retainers tohold the wiring in place.
The new cables along with your throttle cables will be rerouted between your gas tank, directly up tothe handlebars.
Right now your cables are routed through the headlight opening.
My son called 3 HD dealerships and was quoted anywhere between $320-$500 just for labor.
Local bike shop did it for $220.
HD of Chicago has a 20% off sale on parts going on right now.
My son bought all the parts from them online. Had the parts in 2 weeks.
The 04 has the one piece speedo/upper clamp, so with the savings he bought the chrome upper speedo/clamp and lower chrome clamps for the Custom. Looks real classy. If you want those part numbers I can get em for you.
With the10" barsall of your existing electrcal wiring will reach all of your controls.
Hope that helps.
Good Luck!
I have got to be honest, I didn't expect such detailed replies! Thank you all so much. I'm considering doing it myself since I have the service manual. I'm a little intimidated about the brake and clutch cable replacements. I too have called around and received many different quotes from service writers. I have also been told that the wiring won't work from then and they would need to be extended also to run the mini apes. That is frustrating me. I might give it a shot. I might have to come back to you guys for more advice!
Being 6'0 I thought mini apes were perfect on my bike, but then I rode one with 16's... Had to get them done, being as tall as you are I would consider more then 10.
I'm with some of these guy the MINI apes are just that MINIS no real thrill kinda short I'd think if your 6'1 I'd start thinking along the lines of 16"s. Mine are 18" and I'm 6'0 and i could have went with 20"s and still been happy and comfortable.
