There's a diamond coating that's super expensive that works on the tubes, but despite their claims of it being practically impervious to wear, it will score over time. Still looks good tho.
DLC is very hard and wears very well if you change the oil and bushings. Most HD owners do not do that so the DLC will wear due to dirt in the oil. I change my oil and take my forks and internals apart and clean spotless as per my video by Amy every 7,500 miles. You do not have to do that mileage interval but oil is cheaper than replacing parts and the performance is better. Most have no idea what there bike feels like. I have cartridges in all of my bikes.
DLC is great to allow things to slide on them. Showa forks have a bottom slide bushing that slides in the aluminum slider and the top guide bushing that slides on the fork tube.
Good suspension has both bushings captivated in the slider and slides on the fork tube making this upgrade useful. If vanity is the reason than the cost is subjective. If performance is the goal than it is not worth the money spent.
