Chrome wheel. I think the spokes are stainless though. Yeah it's probably more of a pain in the rear to fit this to your bike than it's worth.

Off to see if I can find a used 00-06 Fat Boy rear wheel. I've never been a fan of the solid disc look, but I'm even less of a fan of failing spokes.

Direct fit using the WG's axle & spacers. 00-06 FatBoy (and Dyna's) used a 3/4" bearing so all you have to do is swap out the wheel. I mentioned the FatBoy solid disc wheel because that's what I used. You have many other choices to pick from.

From HD, heres what they say will fit your '02 Dyna -

16" Rear

Fits '00-later XL models (except '11-later XL883L), '00-'05 DynaŽ models, '00-'02 SoftailŽ models (except FXSTD), and '00-'08 Touring models.

Would a pre-2006 fatboy front wheel fit on a 01 Low Rider? Curious

So after a bunch of research, I ended up ordering one of these.

It's the solid chrome rear fat boy wheel for 00-06 Fat Boys and is a direct fit for 00-05 Dyna's. My local Harley Dealer gave me a nice discount and was able to get it in 3 days and I can have it installed on Saturday. Having it installed on Saturday should give me a few days to make sure everything is good before I leave on my trip on Thursday. Picked up some chrome tidbits for the sprocket and belt guards, too

I wasn't crazy about the solid disc wheel on my WG, but I think with a chrome one it should still look pretty cool with a nice laced 21 in the front, plus I won't have to worry anymore about wheel issues with a laced rear wheel.

During my research I bumped into a Harley called the Disc Glide (FXDRG) from the early 80's that is basically a wide glide with a shovel and a solid disc rear wheel made by Centerline. Never knew this one existed!

Yeah, it seems like a lot of hoops to jump through to make it work, Plus I would want to have a few days to ride around on it after I had it installed to make sure everything was OK before I leave on Thursday.

Thanks again for your very generous offer!

Hmm... somehow this ended up getting really expensive!

When I took the bike in to have the chrome fat boy rear wheel put on on Saturday, the tech noticed some issues with the front tire. It has some weird cracking going on inside an area of the tread pattern. It looked like it was defective somehow. Tread was at about 30% so it was going to need replacement soon anyway. Then we checked the pads and rotors on the front... both shot! So now I need a new front tire and front pads and a front rotor. Ugh!

I was talking to the parts guy at the dealership about what to put on the front and he showed me a brand new mirror chrome Harley Thunderstar wheel that would fit my bike. Evidently someone had ordered it and never picked it up. It had a brand new rotor, new bearing kit and a new tire on it, too. He gave me a heck of a deal on it (basically I got the tire, rotor, and bearing kit for free) and so I ended up installing a new front wheel, too!

I so far am liking the mirror chrome Thunderstar 5 spoker in front and the solid disc chrome fatboy wheel in back. I snapped a quick pick that's in my sig. I should hopefully be able to get some more pics up in the next couple days.

Driving the bike with new front and rear wheels makes me think I've pretty much always had problems with the laced wheels. It seems much more solid and predictable and handles much better now than I ever remember it with the laced wheels. I wonder if the laced wheels always have a little flex to them when ridden hard?!?

One thing about spoke wheels, more often than not it is not the spokes that loosen, it is the holes in the hub that become out of round, once that starts you need to replace at least the hub. Mag type wheels are the best way to go.

Looks like you have a very good looking and performing setup now, hey, it's only money....lol

Ride safe and enjoy the trip.

Here's some more pics with the new wheels.

The bike handles so much better with the new wheels and rubber that I managed to get myself a speeding ticket last night coming home from bike night

Are you looking to...just for the trip or as a final solution? I would get mags and not worry. A lot less cleaning, maintenance and there are 100's of choices.

I wasn't originally planning on going mags as a final solution, but I'm likin' the look and the improved handling and you're definitely right about mags being much easier to clean.

Think I may be keepin, 'em
