Changed the oil in my frnt forks for the first time and I'm having way too much fun trying to get the caps started. Does anyone have a technique besides using 1/2" drive socket and putting all your weight on it while trying to start the threads?
Thanks!
Swing the top tree out of the way, insert the tube into the lower tree and tighten it with a few inches above the lower tree - this is your holding device.
Using an extension on your socket, put you're weight on the cap and use your free hand to turn the socket by hand, this will start the threads easily and then you can finish tightening it.
Well, I did have the front end apart at the time, at that stage I had left the top tree off but you could easily move the top tree to one side so it is out of the way - this is of course assuming the wheel, etc is not installed. Regardless, it will be easier to spin the socket/cap by hand to start the threads.
I had a tough time getting the caps started too, until I read Mud's post on the subject https://www.hdforums.com/forum/9609012-post1833.html
Getting on a step stool and getting ABOVE the fork gave me much more leverage. It went together easy after that
