I posted a few weeks back about a leaking primary on my 07 FXDC. Because I'm very busy at work right now I decided to let a local Indy change my primary seal and whatever else to stop the leak.
He called me Saturday and said he has taken it apart 3 times, changed the seals and it's still leaking.
He's at his wits end with it and so am I.
Is he full of s*** and I need to find another mechanic or has this happened before?
So exactly what has he taken apart and replaced so far? Sounds like he's reached the end of his skill set... and bro, if that is the case, I wouldn't let him touch my bike again.
It's easy to bugger that seal if you're not careful or frustrated. I tried twice before taking it to my dealer for warranty replacement. Hated giving up on it but I know my limits.
I'm in the high tech industry and deal with machines that work well under atmosphere pressures. Did you check your sealing surfaces? Are there any deep grooves or scratches across where the oring makes contact with primary cover?
He claims he changed out the inner primary seal and all other seals and gaskets.
He also says he has done this a bunch of times and never had a problem with it leaking afterwards.
Maybe you have a warped inner, or out primary case that's just not mating up correctly.
But ... I can tell you I've had the same aggravation. I took it in because I thought it was the Inner Primary main seal. First time it was the seal between the input / output shaft leaking, and it was major. Then he damaged the inner primary seal putting it back together and letting me take it home. He also was on his second primary gasket. So back to the shop for a 3rd try.
The last time I got it back it only had a drip of a leak and I was tired of it going back and forth to the Indy, so I lived with it. Well right now I'm about ready to address this and after lengthy inspection I think the only trouble now is the he re-used the new primary gasket a second time without much clean up and it never resealed properly. After 5,000 miles I have areas of the primary along the gasket line that are damp with oil and dirty from the road dust. So I see several "grimy" areas and hope this is the extent of that slight drip I get every time I ride and park the bike because I'm going to do the gasket myself I had done it a dozen times before with leaks only showing up many miles later due to wear.
Let's hope you and I both can end this issue this time around!
I don't know if it would work for primary gaskets, but we could NOT get my brother's intake gaskets to seal. Smeared a thin film of Yamabond on the mating surfaces, no issues since.
