Don't feel bad...I'm seriously thinking of trading mine for a Heritage Classic.
Wife and I are doing the same thing (more touring, less day trips) , and are finding the limits of comfort on our SB. I borrowed a buddies Heritage for a day not too long ago and fell in love with the thing. Perfect bike for us for the longer trips, plus I can still strip it down where we are just doing local runs.
I did the opposite,I had an 06 RKC.Great bike and I loved it.But I was kinda getting a little board w/it (had her for five years).I ride solo,don't do that much touring...mostly around town,local stuff.So I decided to get a new '12 Street bob.Put some 16"apes on,new seat,stage one and a set of Bad&G bags on.Real happy w/my new ride.
Rode down to Delmarva from NY last week and the SB handled great, but have to admit did miss the old RKC.Big saddle bags, floor boards and that big heavy feeling crusing down the highway (I'd mention a windshield but I have a detachable windshield on the SB for long trips)
But all in all no complaints. The RK is an awesome bike and does it all.But in a few years I think my next ride will be a Softail Heritage.I think it's it looks great striped down as a solo ride (local trips) or loaded up for two up riding (touring).Good luck w/your RK.
I consider trading mine in on a Road King from time to time also. My wife rides along with me more often than I expected her to, and she definitely gets uncomfortable at anything longer than an hour. I've already put on the biggest seat I can fit on it.
But I still spend 75% of the time solo, and I just love the way the Dyna rides solo. Not sure I can give that up...
I looked at RK's last weekend, but since I have an RT for long rides, I just couldn't see spending the $'s for another touring bike. Have owned both a Heritage and a Street Glide, but wasn't really happy with either.
To me, a Dyna is a Sportster on steroids and an RK is a Dyna on steroids, and maybe some ludes, too. A more sedate ride than the Dynas... tomp dd50
