Default Rebuild

Got an 04 fxdx 46000 miles and sounds like I need to rebuild the top end or bore out the cylinder and get a new piston. any idea on cost? Thanks in advance.

Cost will really depend on if you do it yourself or have it done, and if you are EFI or carb

Engine oil light is on, and sounds horrible, almost like piston slap, sounds like its whining while running, when I shut her down I hear a sort of a clank in the cylinder. Initially thought the whinning was the tranny low on fluid but the fluid levels are all good. Not sure if I'll tackle myself or take it in, really gonna depend on cost to have done and if I have the tools to do it myself.

Yeah, you might need a whole lot more than a top end, especially if you keep running. My guess is at 40000+ miles if you have never been into your cam chest, it is shot. The sounds you are hearing may be the cam chain rubbing on bare metal, and the oil light would be because the oil pump probably got destroyed in the process.

If you are mechanical at all, I would tear into your cam chest asap and get ready to spend some cash on the SE hydraulic upgrade and cams/bearings.

Hope it all works out for you, but you may find some nasty damage in there too.

Bore your cylinders and pistons - $300+, cams - $200+, gaskets and bearings ~$100, Cyco replacement tensioners - $60, headwork - $300+. You can spend more doing the hydraulic tensioner upgrade or gear drives. Questionable whether its needed though. If you are hearing noises, you may have damage in your bottom end as well. Now start adding more zeroes to the end of everything.
