Your going to have fender rubbing problems before the forks come in to play. Some tires will have better traction and track better on grooved pavement than others but if you want a better ride I'd look into suspension mods. Just changing out the front springs will do wonders

Have to disagree with you there, I installed 3.5F and 6.0R 18" wheels on my FXDC along with the wide glide front end and Avon Cobra radials and the difference was pretty dramatic, rides smoother, and handles the corners MUCH better than before. Sticking big rubber on you stock wheels however will probably get you nothing more than looks and degraded handling.
