Default Unknown problem

Iv got a 2004 Twin Cam 88 Dyna and recently out of the blue it started making this whining noise. Thepitch of thbe whine follows the RPMs. The bike is otherwise perfect, other than the noise iv noticed no running or performance issues. I also noticed some silvery streaks in the oil when i changed it the other day. Any thoughts????

I'd check the tensioners first thing! They are a known issue.

Of course check cam tensioners- ya got to get into the cam chest to do that. If it was me, I'd be cutting open the used oil filter to see what's in there- typically people say don't use a hack saw, because you will contaminate the filter with fillings, that you may then mistake for metal from the engine; however, in this case what you should be looking for is little tiny bits of orange/brown plastic- the remains of the tensioner shoes. If there are, well, um, ****, it's probably bad news, given that the whine you are hearing is probably the cam bearings ( I do not take any pleasure in saying this. And I ain't no expert like these other guys, just read fast and a lot, and can use a search engine). Better have a look at this thread:

Default noise

Is it doing it when your sitting still or on the road. I had a noise like that I swear it was the motor and had the dealer check it.nothing wrong. I t got worse, it was the the tires making a whining noise. Has happened on two sets o tires. GOOD LUCK

At 34k miles I had the cam tensioners replaced. When they pulled the cam chest, one of the cam bearings was bad and wore a groove into the cam. That cost a few extra bucks, but I never heard anything. Maybe it's because I wear earplugs.
