Default Is this normal?

I got all the parts together to change my handlebars to mini-apes, what should be a quick few hour job. That was last week. The more I work on it, the more I find things that need fixing, upgrading, cleaning, and or polishing and my ride is still down in the garage. I would say I will be finished today but who knows what I will decide to do next...

Default Update.....

Hope you folks don't mind that I dug this thread up to post my update on my handlebar changeover...I have been busy on my new project, fixin, modifyin, and ridin...and not postin very much. (I'd would rather be riding than sitting in front of a computer anyway )

I spent almost three weeks fixing and tweaking and tuning things...had some major issues with the front brakes after changing the brake line. After I finally found the right brake line, I just could not get it to bleed for crap! I dug into the system and found that the master cylinder was full of crud and totally AFU; cleaned and put a kit in. Still could not get it to reverse bleed (I have done that on a few hundred Cessnas and Pipers and Mooneys in my day and never had it to not work...but there is always a first time, right?). Back to the book.

Searched the garage and dug out my vacuum bleed pump and found that I could not pull a vacuum through the caliper. WTF?? Tore down the caliper and found two of the pistons stuck and the caliper full of crud also. Back to the HD dealer for a $70 kit and 4 new banjo bolt washers...and a new shiny insert (might as well make it look good also). Cleaned, rebuilt and reinstalled the caliper and vacuum bled just like it was supposed to. (I wonder how the front brakes managed to work at all with all the issues I found).

I relocated the front turn signals to the front triple tree. Replaced the hangy-downy fog light switch with a rocker switch I installed in the spare slot above the digital clock on the left side controls...much cleaner look.

When I fired it up I noticed that the speedometer was jumping around when the blinkers were turned on, a tell-tell ground wiring issue symptom. Pulled out the headlight again and checked around and found that one of the pins in the connector for the cluster lights would not lock in the connector. Damn if I didn't have a few of those left over from my aviation technician days so a fix was quick and easy.

Spent a few bucks on new chrome and stainless hardware, new Kuryakyn chrome brake and clutch hand control housings, foot pegs, brake, and shifter controls to replace the ratty ones that came with it along with some nice new chrome trigger brake and clutch control levers to replace the tacky naked lady ones that were on it. Scored a couple of nice used Live to Ride long stem rear view mirrors to replace the ratty ones that were on it, washed, wiped, and polished, and back in business!

Did a few short runs and a couple of long one back in the sticks...good to be riding again and the handlebars are just outstanding! However, I noticed that it was idling a little rough, taking a little long to warm up, and had some blowback through the carb occasionally. Vacuum leak? I didn't replace the carb o-ring when I had it off so off to the parts store for another one...and a choke cable (the plastic mount broke the second time I used it after the modifications). I replaced those last night. Running smooth and steady now with no blowback so far but I have not had a chance to really test it out yet...rain today.

I will get some pics up as soon as I can remember to take some. Every time I think about it, it is too dark or raining.
