I'm getting a gear grinding noise when I hit the starter button. I's like the starter is not engaging all the way with the ring gear. It only happens occaisonally but becomes more frequent as the bike gets hot. Any thoughts?
Give the solenoid/starter clutch area a good rap with a plastic hammer or screwdriver handle when it does that; starter clutch could be failing? Happened to me...
anything done to the motor? like a 95" kit.
I only say this cus with a high compression pistons its harder for the started to turn the motor over.
end result starter goes out faster lol
My dad has a t-sport with a 95" high compression and is on his 3rd starter. He had the same thing happen to him
But thats with 100,000+ miles.
Id follow sharkey's advice
BTW Nice bike sharkey

95" 10.5:1 compression 60k miles. It's been doing it on and off for a couple years but it got more frequent this year. Can I just get the clutch or should I change anything else?
I've got a 103 in my T, the starter clutch was first to go, then the clutch basket teeth....I replaced the starter clutch with an aftermarket one, the starter with an HD 1.4 and used another HD basket when I saw NO difference in the aftermarket one...It's important to me to be able to repair/service on the road, preferably at a HD dealer...I travel far from home and the HD dealer network cannot beat
Thanks guys. A friend of mine has the same problem on an '05 Electraglide and he bought the whole assembly starter, soleniod and complete housing with gears for $150 for somewhere on line called Pat's small engine. I don't like to buy too much online too difficult to send things back if there is a problem. I'm leaning towards just the clutch for now. It's not too difficult to take apart and funds are limited. All the other parts, Starter, solenoid etc. seem to be OK. Anyways there's no rush it's the middle of winter after all. Thanks again.
