Mirrors above or below on apes?

On a softail, but we're talkin about apes and mirrors 
I'm running 18" burly's...I tried the mirrors under, but I'm paranoid about keeping an eye on cagers behind me and at my 4/8 o'clock, so I put em' back on top. I've known and heard about too many people gettin rear ended at a light, so I have to have a clear view without moving my arm. I do like the look of the mirrors under though...

It depends on the apes. would have loved mine under, but the way my grips are angled it brings the mirrors closer to centerline and I can't see around me. If I swapped sides to move them more outwards I was looking at my wrists. If the grips on the apes you're getting are straight and not angled like mine I'd roll with them under.

Left, below on my 16" apes. Stock mirrors did not have enough length. I done a lot of searching and found a plain chrome mirror with a long stem, got it down where I could see without shifting my arm out of the way.

^^ now that I think of it harley dealer here sells long stem mirrors in sets. That would be perfect for mounting under the bar
