guys-
not looking to start an oil war here..i'd like to put amsoil in my Harley (first oil change (for a new to me 02 fxdx) i'd like to change all the oil. contacted my local amsoil rep and this is what he sent me:
More than happy to get you AMSOIL for your Harley at my dealer wholesale cost and have done the same for many of my customers who also have Harley's.
I'm still learning the Harley market (there are so many variations) and unfortunately can't speak from experience with the Harley.
The engine takes 2.5-3 qts of AMSOIL SAE 20w50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil (product MCVQT) and the filter is an EAOM134 (black) or EAOM134C (chrome).
Two schools of thought on the primary and the tranny. One is that many just use the same engine oil in all three holes. The other school uses a 10w40 for the primary and a gear lube for tranny, some use 75w140, some 75w90. I have several local Harley customers and they all use 20w50 in the engine, 10w40 in the primary and 75w90 in the tranny and are happy with that setup. Capacity of the primary is not spec'd out. There is a procedure in the manual to change it out. Most order two quarts. The tranny should take just under a quart.
You should get some good responses soon, but I have heard sooo many positive comments on Red Line transmission oil with ShockProof that I am going to put that in very soon even though I am not due to change for a long time.
soem years require the 20/50 some require the gear oil, you would have to check with the FSM for that specific year of that specific model harley.
as for the primary oil, with bike sitting level fill the primary till the fluid just touches the clutch basket is what my dealer's tech says. IIRC the fluid spec for the primary is 1.3-1.5qt's or soemwhere in aroudn there.
i have a 2001 dyna fxd,
3 qts(put 2.5qts in start run for a min then shut down and check oil level top up till full as needed) royal purple max cycle 20w50 for the engine,
1 qt royal purple max gear 75w90 in the trans
around 1.5qts max cycle 20w50 in the primary

I've got a buddy that builds motors and bikes. Every blown trans he's had through his shop has had redline shock therapy in it. Some people love it and have no issues and maybe it's just co incidence.
I'm running Amsoil in everything. It seems like my bike shifts smoother and a little more quiet. I did the swap at the 5k service and adjusted the clutch too, so I can say whether that made the difference in shifting or the oil. Regardless, I like being able to get one product I can use for it all.
I use AMSOIL 20W50 in engine, 75W90 in trans and HD primary. My brother tried AMSOIL in primary on his Road Kink and said he thought he could feel the clutchs slip some under heavy load. Went back to HD primary and everything was ok.
