Get a GOOD heavy leather jacket and I would suggest you get it a size larger so you can put thermals and such under the jacket. I have a JH heavy deerskin leather jacket that really cuts the wind and I went to wal-mart and got some thinsulate lined leather gloves that work pretty good, (11.00 bucks). As far as driving, don't worry about what you are doing on the bike, look at what all the cagers are doing, or going to do, around you. The chances of getting hurt by what you do are small but the cagers will do their best to munch you. Take the msf course and get more good info on riding safely. Congrats and welcome. You'll learn a lot here. I know that I have. I'd pick up a shop manual as soon as you can. Great way to get familiar with your bike.

ditto - course will get you more out of riding - then, get a jacket and pants - the armoured Kevlar/Goretex are less expensive, than leather...
