I cannot see regretting a PV tuner with stage 1 mods on your bike. Maybe if the bike has already been dynoed and you never want to do a mod again, but even then it is a nice tool.
Idno man.. I get why your upset, but on a positive note sounds like everything you wanted to get done and paid for, is actually already done! So more money for other parts.. I'm willing to bet it was tuned if it already has the PV and them playing the "well we can't tell until we get it on a dyno" sounds like a sales pitch. There are tell tale signs if your bike is running lean. Exhaust popping, high engine heat, pinging noise coming from motor. Not sure about the PV but I have a power comander and you can download maps to it for the upgrades you did to your bike.
the pv didnt come with the bike. I had to buy that. The HD dealer returned the AC kit when they realized they messed up. But i still have the power vision. So i'm out $540. I never had any high engine heat, exhaust popping, or pinging noise. I just kinda feel like i got screwed. Its a shitty feeling.
I think if my bike ran fine for 5000 miles I would be happy about it.
What made you think you had to spend the money?
What other mods did you have done?
When I bought my 03 FLHTCUI I was told it was stock. I emailed Jamie, at Fuel Moto a pic of back of air cleaner and he told me it had a stage one. I called the original dealer, gave them VIN, they told me it had ECM flash download.
I think it still runs rich, and I didn't get it dynoed, because it would be $800 for SERT and Dyno time.
So, it still might be worth it to keep Powervision to adjust tuning, now and after future mods.

If your bike had all that already on it with no tune, then you needed the programmer. Like you said, it's what you really wanted in the first place. No matter how well you think your bike was running, all the people that I trust tell me that this would eventually cause problems without the tune. Your bike should be running a lot better now with the tune? Right? Ya the dealer shouldn't have sold you a part that was already on your bike. but they did make that right too. So enjoy your bike my friend.
I assume that your bike already had the download (which is the only thing that makes sense). The dealer would have known this if they ran the VIN. Some bikes even with the download will run far too lean (My guess is that it relate to the specific exhaust that is used). How much better a bike will run with a tuner as opposed to a stage 1 download depends on the bike - from barely noticable to dramatic, with the majority somewhere in between. Personally, I think the biggest problem here was a failure to communicate between you and the dealer, as I can see how both of you misunderstood what the other was saying. If nothing else, with your tuner you have a good start on future engine mods.

Guess it's possile that the bike was tuned at one time. But if it was an aftermarket tuner, maybe the orinal owner wanted to kep it. An aftermarket program type tuner would have to be returned to stock settings to release the programmer for tuning another bike. If the owner used an SE tunner, he should have recieve it with the keys at the time of purcase. Not sure if an SE tuner can be unlocked?
Wow...If they cant figure out if your bike is running lean without putting it on a dyno....go somewhere else! Just pull your spark plugs immediately after a cruise and take a look.
