After digesting what I've read here and other places, i think I'm just gonna throw on some progressive 412's and slide the forks up to match.
the reason I'm going this way is 2 fold.
1. I can't afford a new bike right now and this is the cheapest solution.
2. I don't want to change the dynamics if the FXDX.
Going this route will allow me or the next owner to revert to stock pretty quickly and easily. I plan to keep the stock parts to pass on to the new owner (whenever that may be).
Now, as to the 412's on a 2004 FXDXI... Who has done this and what did you do about the top bolt being too short (or so I've read)? Any suggestions? Don't want to start a new thread so please answer her.
Reading this thread is making me sick to my stomach.
Ventana,
Before you ruin the handling characteristics of that FXDX, why don't you try a lowered C&C seat first, like Hogpro suggested? If you can "barely" flatfoot the bike now, a lowered C&C seat will probably take you the rest of the way.
Decreasing the ground clearance and suspension travel of your FXDX will produce a noticeably shittier ride, and decreased lean angles. Don't ruin that beautiful FXDX.
I have a pair of burley read shocks in chrome if you are interested in them, im waiting on my black ones to get in now.... PM if you want to swing a deal.

LOl, Bronson, relax, take some Bromo, man, lol.
I'm aware of all that you said believe me... that's why I'm asking so many questions. I love the bike, it's just that sudden stops are starting to become an adventure. There's so many other things that you need to worry about riding in the city, having to worry about a sudden stop just detracts from the enjoyment of riding.
I'm looking into getting a new bike before I change anything on the bike but I doubt my budget will allow it. If I make changes, they will be non-destructive and easily undone.
Stock shocks are 13". I am sure the bike would probably handle better if you get the front forks lowered the proper way. Also, get a different seat that will help lower you too. I like my C&C.
I was checking out the progressive tent down in Daytona during Bike Week. Their computer showed stock as 12 inch. Which is it???
