Default We gots a problem...

So i change this piece (can't think of the name lol) but now its leaking like a b*tch. I changed the gasket but when removing the old one it came off in pieces... the only thing i can think of is that there is a piece still stuck on not allowing a seal...

anyone have any other ideas?

thx
Sorry the pic is upside down

pull it off, use a razor on the inside to and back of the cover so that you can clean off all the old gasket, from there you are going to want to install the fresh gasket and then torque the bolts to spec, i am guessing it is a combo of bolts not being torqued to spec and dirty gasket surface

Scrape the mating surfaces. Then spray a little brake clean on a rag and wipe down the surfaces. Wait a couple of seconds and apply gaskets and torque bolts to spec.

I had some leaks after doing a bunch of powder coating, sure enough I over tightened the screws, stupid torque specs...

In addition to what's been said there is a suggested pattern to follow when torquing the bolts. I don't recall it off hand but just don't go around in a circle. At least tighten the opposing bolts if you don't know the correct order.

My manual refers to that as the primary chain case inspection cover...and be careful about using a razor or Xacto knife unless you have a lot of experience doing it that way...you would not want to nick the chain case gasket face. I like to use mineral spirits or var-sol to soften the old gasket pieces and a small steel putty knife to scrape the mating surfaces.

Don't know what kind of gasket you had or the material it was. Both of my bikes have the same inspection cover and yes they are a PIA when the primary cover needs to come off, but the gaskets always come off in one piece and at times reusable. I installed M6 auto primary chain adjusters on both bikes, that's one job I don't need to worry about. The 02 has about 42K miles on it and the adjuster is like new. You can use James or Genuine gaskets on your bike.
