Mirrors
Great response to the op's question about people's opinions on whether or not he should run mirrors. Anyways, back to the subject, there is a website that tracks individual state laws concerning motorcycle legislation. I know in VA technically you're required to run one (1). Now, whether or not the individual feels that they can get away without any (I know people here who don't run them) or you feel safer with two (I have two) is a matter of opinion.
Page 6 of the Texas Motorcycle Operators handbook sez: minimum street-legal bike has a headlight/taillight and brakelight, front&rear brakes, turn signals, horn and 2 mirrors.

I ran without em for a while.... but when ya pass a cop I think it looks too suspicious to turn all the way around to see if he followed you.
First rule of self defense is knowing your surroundings at all times, mirrors help with that.
