Cv40 question
Hi There
I have a question
This is what i have
2003 fxdl
big bore 95" with
street ported heads
andrews 37g cam
forcewinder intake
vance hines big
radius exhaust with big city thunder baffles.
cv40 with 48 and 195 jets with sportster needle
feels flat
maybe 50 and 200 jets?
Or should I consider a bigger carb?
any help would be appreciated

Each jet costs about $5, so it's not expensive to experiment. You might go over to the CVP site and see what others have experienced with similar engine build. Something also to consider is the effect of todays fuels. Ethanol deteriorates 'soft' parts used in carbs. I use an ethanol treatment in every fill-up to help mitigate the problems it causes.

Everything I've read about the Sportsters needle is positive, there is no need to shim it. Use a small mirror and look up at the bottom of the carb and the adjustment screw is on the back side right up next to the float bowl. I am using the stock jets 45 & 190. I have a 95" kit and 203 cams, there are no flat spots even while 2 up. Check your plugs, they are the windows to your air/fuel mix. Sounds like you are real rich.
Did some searching but I found it. The May 2011 issue of American Iron Magazine has a good article, written by Joe Minton, on tuning the CV40 carb. Good read if you can find that issue.
ive never had good luck with the sportster needle with any big twin

I drill slide to .120 not .125 . I also polish slide and inside of carb venturie and reshape bottom of slide , I use 48 slow and 190 main to start
