Battery Disconnect
I was a Surface Sonar Technician for over 12 years in the Navy. I worked on computer cabinets the size of upright double door freezers. Rooms of them standing side by side. Along with all that electronics experience I got to work on a winch with a drum that stands about 8 feet high. I would imagine I could pull an Abrams tank out of the mud with that thing. Strong enough to play out 5,200 feet of inch and three quarters steel cable with a four inch sonar array eight hundred feet long on the end of it. So I dealt with hydraulics and more electrical on that system. After I spent 3 years learning that stuff I went to the fleet and spent 4 hard *** years working on that stuff day and night. Then I got to spend 3 years teaching a bunch of boneheaded 18 to 24 year olds how to work on it too.
I know electricity and electronics. Plenty comfortable working on almost anything. I just wanted to know if any of the old hands knew if a certain step in the instructions was all that important, or not.
my first post simply was to state the obvious. everything you touch with a wire, HD says to unhook the battery. just as they say "failure to not follow all of our silly *** comments in this manual could result in serious injury or death".
Doesn't current flow backwards in the Navy? - or do you guys have it right and we are messed up

OK -
................................................
NO.
got a lot of respect for you but don't understand your reply here. Seems you are not in agreement with my position - which is OK. If anyone can explain to me how current can flow from one node to another without voltage potential then I'm willing to listen.
anyway - the real answer is - if you don't feel comfortable without unhooking the battery - then by all means disconnect it.
Hey Mud -
I was not gonna take any pics of my winter mods until I was done, but could not resist and posted one in another thread. In a way I'm kind of glad you didn't see it - but figured if anyone stumbled upon it and looked close - it would be you........Not a good pic - use your keen eye and tell me what you think. I'm stuck on the bars - help me (don't say apes)
far from done -
"I have a good understanding of electricity and electronics".
Keep in mind that a good # of the folks that post a query here
have a good reason for doing so. They lack a good working knowledge
of this very expensive piece of machinery.
Not to mention a basic understanding of electricals.
"What is a ground??" That's been asked here, and on and on.
My point is that it is a GOOD habit to disconnect.
45 years around automobiles, forty some odd with murdersickles.
"anyone on the forum had an issue with things blowing up ????"
Fair question glide. The answer, in my case, is yes.
If you need to ask - should I disconnect?? -
I say YES it is a GOOD habit.
As for your challenge to explain
"how current can flow from one node to another without voltage potential"
Got kids?? friends?? beer??

Answer:
Yes, Yes, NO.
Maybe lack of beer is making me crazy tonight.
My point is that modern automotive/motorcycle manufacturers take great steps to account for all of the nasty ways we try to mess electronics up when we get our hands on their designs. This was perhaps not the case 45 years ago.
BTW - there was a question directly to you in one of my previous comments - completely unrelated to this thred - please reply with PM if necessary - I did not intend to hijack this thread

Like I said - not done yet but couldn't resist posting a pic in one of the threads. Figured you would bump into it and comment.
Now that I've opened my big mouth - here's the thread:

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
but, I'm not sure where you're going with your query.
Without the tank, it is hard for me to visualize the end result.
The inverted forks - nice touch indeed.
Looks like some sort of Wide trees - a bold approach, and appropriate, in my opinion.
The cast wheels are very nice units - personally, I do not care for the look.
Motorcycles need laced wheels, for my eye.
The bars appear a bit puny - w/o the tank, I'm speculating.
With the tank on, I'm guessing they would look even more puny.
You mention a dislike for apes,
I think some of the rat bastard bars may work well for yours.
Your personal preference, and the comfort level, are most important.
Right now, the t/signal placement(front)is very uncomfortable to my eye.
The flow is interrupted from the angle of this snapshot.
An appropriate fender would certainly compliment and finish off the front.
Coming along nicely.

Thanks for the feedback. Most of this is just stock with the exception of the wide front. I was really looking for your comments on that. Once I had that done, I realized there were a whole bunch of things that needed attention. Opened up the "can of worms"
What I'm really stuck on is the bars, and what makes this tough is the speedo. Yes I can go to the drag tbars, that's going to cost me much more than I want to spend - prob $400-$500 because I need new speedo housing, bracket, and bars. I really like boogiewithtucks setup - but the speedo kills that - can't do it. Do you think fat crazy z bars would look out of place? Apes tend to have more pullback than I'm looking for, but might go with 8.5" baby apes.
Agree with the turn signals - I'll move em down to the lower tree.
I'm putting the stock fender back on, but it's the last thing - don't want to drop something on it.
I knew you would mention the wheels - they are stock right now. When I acquired the front end, even before it was on, I know these wheels would not work. I'm not a spokie guy, so I did buy a new set of chrome wheels - sitting in the closet right now - like I said - I'm not done. Snowed here again last night so I have more time.
