97 Dyna clutch won't adjust
In shop, clutch out...nothing is bent, wrong, stuck wtf? Think we may found it... clutch hub "teeth" have worn grooves! Going to try buffing off a bit... any other hints please post... thanks guys.. good to be on here again...hope everyone is riding
Things would be right, go to take off, click in to gear, bike wouldn't sit with clutch in. Re-adjust. Same, less or more pull. Work the clutch lever and all of a sudden it collapsed. Dick around with it to get back the tension, click in to gear, she'd take off again. You could hear the plates whirring.
So back on to bench.
Pulling off hub cover, loosen off cable, pull clutch plates, basket/assembly. The clutch plates, spring retainer, push rod all look good. The only wear is clutch shell "fingers" lol don't know the real word, where the pressure plate slides on to. Noticed grooves worn in to clutch shell from the pressure plate.
With hub open working the clutch lever it was noticed the pressure plate came in on a slight angle... working the clutch lever eventually it was noticed the pressure plate hung up... causing the clutch lever to collapse.
I'm moving up a notch and putting an new improved version of clutch basket. You can go diamond somethin... ha ha there I go in the unknown.. but someone in the shops will know the correct... it's $500 Canadian for new clutch assembly however beats the hell out of the aluminum garbage in there now.
I'm putting in 2nd hand, like new high quality however not the "diamond whatever" cause I have a circle of cool riding buddies with shops.
will post if I still have same problem... otherwise I'd say if this fits... it's your prob too.
"Official" instructions were not accurate enough for me so I succeeded only when got better exact advice.
When adjusting the clutch
First loosen the hex.
Then start to tighten it carefully clockwice.
When you feel its just about taking contact
loosen it 1/2-1 round backwards.
(Mine started working when I did the whole round)
I'm sure most of you have lot of experience bout clutches but the lesson for me was dare to adjust it loose enough.
Ofcourse loosen and adjust the cable exactly it says in the manual.
sigh, however, I have now been informed... and shown, may as well put in a new primary chain. oh well, having fun learning hands on...... damn well better be on the road for the rain this weekend though
