You can do it with one of the cheaper units where you get 2 lights hi/lo for under $100. These are made for car typically but most HID's are made at the same set of factories. The problem with running those with the smaller headlights is you have no place to put the ballast. Unless you have a fairing, then you can mount the ballast near the headlight.
I have seen the extension so you can place the ballast under the seat...I have tried 3 different models of those and i suggest you geep the ballast as close to the headlight as possible.
Anyone tried installing an H.I.D. projector into an OEM 5 3/4" HD Dyna headlight bucket, similar to this?
If so, what projector did you use, & how did you install it? It's gotta be possible to do it for less than $400.
If you're looking to spend up to $400 as I infer from your post, you should just get the HD LED headlight. You can get it for around $320 shipped and there is no ballast to worry about. It was plug and play on my '97 WG.
Or you could go with DDM I believe. Also, search for a thread on HIDs with JRK5892 as the user name. There is info + pics for you.

Thanks Joe. Yea, I've already installed a DDM Tuning 35w HID in the OEM 5-3/4" bucket and it's outstanding! Just thinking a good projector would make the light spread even more functional.
I installed the ballast/igniter right below the left side of tank, stuck to the frame. I originally tried to install them below the seat using extention cables, but the distance between the igniter & lamp was too far, and it wouldn't strike off. Igniter has to be pretty close to lamp apparently, at least wi DDM Tuning. And it's hard-wired to ballast, so both had to be moved forward. Doesn't look the best, but they are black as is my bike, so not too noticeable.
I got a Xentec off ebay and an extension for teh ballast and put the ballast under the seat. I added a relay to run it off of as it was having issues on teh regular electrical system. Total cost was about $50 for everything which included a second HID.

Interesting. Xentec kit has ignitor integrated into the ballast. How long was your hi-voltage AMP cable to lamp, and what was the gauge of it?
What issues was it having running off the H4 connector? Lamp refused to ignite? I'm drawing power from the H4 connector, maybe that's part of my problem with relocated ignitor/ballast.
Without the relay it would flicker on and off when it got. I don;t remember what gauge wire I used. Whatever I had in my tool box. I have been running it like this for at least 6 months daily and never had had an issue since adding the relay. I also like the fact that the ignitor is not a separate piece. The extension I got is 36" long.
I was looking at this one. Looks like it wont fit in a 5 3/4" bucket. I now have a 7" and am going to take some measurements to see if it will fit in there.
